Industrial design and product development, since 2001

This is the oldest thing here and it is still what everything else is measured against. Industrial design and product development means drawing something so that it can actually be made: in a factory, at a price, on a date.

What industrial design covers here

Product design and redesign. Research and development. Structural concepts and mechanical assemblies. Material selection. Manufacturing preparation. Mould design for plastic products. Aluminium systems and metal structures. Furniture and lighting. Commercial display and point of sale. Twenty five years of it.

The habit that comes with that is the useful part: I think automatically about how a thing gets built, assembled, shipped, displayed and sold. Not only about how it looks in a render.

Design for manufacturing is the whole job

A drawing that cannot be produced is a picture. Design for manufacturing means the draft angles are right, the wall thickness is right, the tool can open, the part comes out, and the assembly does not need a third hand.

Get that wrong and you find out at the tooling stage, which is the most expensive place to find out anything. I have made the moulds. That is exactly why the drawings work.

Prototype before you commit

3D printing, casting, machining. Product prototyping exists to answer one question: is this actually the thing? A prototype that costs a few hundred is how you avoid a tool that costs thousands and makes the wrong part perfectly.

Where most industrial design services stop

At the file. This one does not, because the same person carries it to the prototype, the production run, the packaging, the listing and the traffic. That is the difference between buying a drawing and buying an outcome.
